PSHCE

Da Vinci Community College PSHCEE department

PSHCEE is seen as an integral part of the life and development of da Vinci.  It is delivered through two designated lessons a week in year 7 and 8 and one a week in years 9, 10 and 11. Year 7’s being taught by their form tutor to develop the relationship between staff and students.

PSHCEE is taught by a team of 14 staff from a variety of subject specialisms, each bringing their own unique style and experience to the department.

The curriculum

The curriculum is devised to be progressive through the key stages, building on common themes and developing students’ knowledge and skills.  Throughout the curriculum a wide variety of external agencies and guest speakers are used to enhance learning and expose students to the wider world.

However, the PSHCEE curriculum escapes the confines of timetabled lessons through integration in many other departments, theme days and extra curricula trips and excursions.

Teaching of PSHCEE at da Vinci encompasses AFL through providing students with opportunities to; Develop confidence to improve their knowledge and skills; Be involved in reviewing and reflecting on their learning and identifying areas for improvement and know what success is and how to achieve it through competent and accurate feedback
Schemes of work are well written and provide meaningful objective led lessons and opportunities for peer and self assessment.  They incorporate time for the use and development of R-time (relationships) and C-time (circle); students are encouraged to discuss and explore attitudes and beliefs.  The schemes also incorporate the PLTS and year 7/8 themes.

Details of the topics covered in each key stage can be found In the sections below.

'Party Time' Performance

This week all of Year 8 watched a theatre performance called Party Time.

The play was about alcohol misuse.

What I enjoyed most was where they were telling jokes, because they were funny, and I liked the bit where they were dancing because that was funny too.

The main message of Party Time was not to drink lots of alcohol at parties, especially if you are under age.  Another message was don’t get in cars with strangers.

The play links in with work we are doing in PSHCE about drugs and alcohol.

Year 8 theme day Living in poverty

Year 8 theme day

Living in poverty

A quarter of the world’s population live in severe poverty. Many work long hours in poor conditions just to earn enough to stay alive, often surviving on less than £1.30 per day. With this money they have to pay for everything – food, clothes, somewhere to live, school and medicines when they get sick. Many workers have no employer or regular wage. Instead they work as street vendors: shining shoes, selling newspapers or recycling waste materials.

Based on resources from Oxfam and Christian aid students took part in 3 sessions exploring this theme.
